Raton postpones data center moratorium
Raton Commissioners considered a proposed six-month moratorium on data center licenses and zoning approvals but ultimately postponed the decision. The delay is to allow for further information from attorneys regarding an existing MOU with Atterix. City officials plan to continue developing ordinances to regulate data center businesses in the interim.
Raton Commissioners, during their Tuesday night meeting, discussed a proposed six-month moratorium on issuing business licenses or zoning approvals for data centers. The intention behind the moratorium was to provide city officials with time to develop comprehensive ordinances for this type of business.
However, despite initial apparent support, the commissioners decided to postpone the resolution. The postponement was prompted by the need for more information from attorneys, specifically concerning a current Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with a company identified as Atterix.
City Manager Segotta indicated that the city will proceed with the development of regulatory ordinances for data centers even with the moratorium's postponement. Commissioners are scheduled to hold a workshop on June 23 to further discuss these matters. The proposed Resolution 2026-29 aimed to enable the city to establish sufficient regulations that could potentially make the establishment of data centers in Raton less likely, even though outright prevention is not possible.
