The initial talks at a July 21 meeting highlighted a critical gap in the city's code of ordinance: a lack of definition for large-scale data centers, a point raised by City Commissioner Demetrius Petrow.
Commissioner Petrow advocated for an 18-month moratorium, suggesting this period would allow the city ample time to refine its code and to educate commissioners on data center specifics for developing a comprehensive regulatory framework. Conversely, Vice Mayor Barbara Langdon proposed a shorter, six-month moratorium, emphasizing the urgency to define large and hyperscale data centers to ensure adequate protections for the city while not inadvertently hindering beneficial developments.
Residents also voiced strong opposition during the meeting. Tim Ritchie cited Florida's severe water crisis, calling for a permanent ban on data centers. Robin San Vicente expressed concerns beyond environmental impacts, highlighting potential issues with noise, quality of life, public health, safety, and strain on city services. The city manager, Jerome Fletcher, confirmed that North Port has received one application for a possible data center.
