A key development in this field comes from the California Institute of Technology, which, in collaboration with Sophia Space, has unveiled a patented cooling system. This system is designed to enable orbital data centers by the early 2030s, leveraging continuous solar power available in space and a unique method for dissipating excess heat into deep space. Such innovations are crucial for overcoming the operational challenges of computing in a non-atmospheric environment.
Proponents argue that space-based solar arrays could offer a consistent, carbon-free energy source, contrasting with terrestrial solar farms that face daylight limitations and require backup power. This could lessen the burden on communities impacted by large data center developments.
