Arizona Commission Moves To Prevent Ratepayers From Subsidizing Data Centers, Large Power Users

The Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) has unanimously approved a new review process aimed at preventing current electric cooperative customers from bearing the transmission and infrastructure costs associated with large electricity consumers, such as data centers and manufacturers. The decision came on Wednesday following a joint proposal from the Arizona Electric Power Cooperative (AEPCO), a wholesale electricity provider, and five of its distribution companies.
This new framework seeks to ensure that the significant power demands of these large users do not lead to existing ratepayers subsidizing the necessary grid upgrades and expansion. The measure is designed to create a more equitable distribution of costs, ensuring that those who require substantial power infrastructure contribute proportionally to its development and maintenance.
