Beaufort County commissioners to vote on 1-year pause on data center development
Beaufort County commissioners are preparing to vote on a one-year pause on new data center development. Supporters cite the need to study impacts including electricity demand, noise and future development, while opponents argue data centers could bring tax benefits and lower residents’ tax burden.
Beaufort County commissioners are considering a one-year moratorium on data center development as the county evaluates the potential effects of large facilities. Electricity demand is a central concern, with officials questioning how much power data centers could require and how that growth might affect the area.
Commissioner Hood Richardson said a data center could lower taxes by generating county revenue. Commissioner Stan Deatherage said the county should not shut the door on future development, but should establish strong requirements addressing noise, electricity and other impacts before projects move forward. The commissioners were expected to vote on the proposed pause.
