Union Township community voices concerns over handling of data center proposal
Union Township residents voiced strong opposition to a proposed data center, citing potential impacts on the environment, water supply, electric grid, light and noise pollution. Township officials said a data center moratorium may not be legally possible but are developing ordinance amendments to establish stricter project guardrails and scheduled another public meeting.
Residents of Union Township in Huntingdon County packed a supervisors meeting after a town hall that generated extensive opposition to a proposed data center. Speakers said they lacked critical information about the project and raised concerns about environmental impacts, water use, electric-grid capacity, and light and noise pollution.
Several residents called for a moratorium, but township officials said they believe the municipality cannot legally impose one. Supervisors are instead working on amendments to the township's subdivision and land development ordinance that would establish stricter requirements for the project. The board also approved another public meeting for early November.
