During a meeting of the Mason District Land Use Advisory Committee, residents voiced significant concerns about the substation's planned proximity to their homes, citing potential health effects, environmental impacts, and a possible strain on the local power grid. The proposed substation is critical for a data center development initiated by an unnamed Miami-based private investment firm, which plans to build a facility south of Esdohr Road, with a second one slated for later. While the State Corporation Commission has already approved the substation, it still requires approval from the Fairfax County Planning Commission.
Dominion Energy, responsible for the substation, addressed the necessity of the project due to insufficient existing facilities to meet the new power demand. However, some board members of the land use committee sided with the residents, acknowledging that the location was chosen without adequate consideration for the neighbors.
