Springville board approves one-year moratorium on data centers and large battery storage facilities
The Village of Springville Board of Trustees approved Local Law 12, establishing a one-year moratorium on data centers and large standalone battery storage facilities. Mayor Russ Belscher said the moratorium will give the village time to evaluate what development it may allow and expressed concern that data centers could consume more electricity than the village’s low-cost power allocation can support.
The Village of Springville Board of Trustees approved a one-year moratorium on data centers and standalone battery storage units during an Oct. 19 meeting. The moratorium, enacted as Local Law 12, is intended to give the village time to determine how such facilities should be regulated.
Mayor Russ Belscher said large data centers could use substantially more electricity than the village’s 10-megawatt low-cost power allocation, potentially affecting the availability of affordable power for residents. The board also approved submitting two projects to the Erie County Community Development Block Grant Program, including a sidewalk extension and support for rural transit services.
