Entergy is seeking fast-tracked approval from the Louisiana Public Service Commission for seven new gas power plants to power Meta's $27 billion data center in Richland Parish. Advocates express concern that these costs will be passed on to Louisiana ratepayers through higher utility bills. The Commission approved Entergy's motion for fast-tracking, with a final vote on the application set for November.

Entergy has requested that the Louisiana Public Service Commission (LPSC) expedite the approval process for seven new natural gas power plants, intended to provide electricity for Meta's proposed $27 billion data center in Richland Parish. The utility is seeking to bypass portions of the standard review, including independent analysis typically designed to protect consumers. Larry Hand, Entergy's vice president of regulatory and public affairs, emphasized that the company still needs to demonstrate compliance with the "Lightning Directive" to qualify for the exemption. Consumer advocates, such as Alaina DiLaura of the Alliance for Affordable Energy, have voiced strong concerns that the substantial costs associated with these new plants, which would supplement three already approved, will inevitably be shifted onto state residents and other ratepayers through increased utility bills. LPSC Commissioner Jean Paul Coussan acknowledged the primary obligation to protect ratepayers and prevent electricity costs from rising due to new businesses. Commissioner Eric Skrmetta clarified that the commission has not yet approved the final application, stating that the process is just beginning and analysis is underway. Coussan further noted the need to balance consumer protection with the economic benefits, such as jobs, that new businesses bring to Louisiana. Despite the ongoing debate, the Commissioners voted 4 to 1 to approve Entergy's motion to fast-track the review timeline during their meeting in Alexandria. A final decision on the power plant application is scheduled for November.
