Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce backs Pine Island data center
The Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce announced its support for Google's proposed Project Skyway data center in Pine Island, citing jobs, tax-base growth, education funding and infrastructure investment. Some Pine Island residents oppose the project, arguing that its scale would be disproportionate for the small community, while the city council remains responsible for the ultimate decision.
The Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce is backing Google's proposed Project Skyway data center in Pine Island after hosting an information session for the project's developers and regional business leaders. Chamber President officials said the development could create jobs, expand the tax base and provide additional support for schools and local infrastructure.
Opposition remains within Pine Island. Resident Aubrey Dirkson questioned whether the Rochester-based organization fully understands the project's potential effects on the community and argued that the scale of the Google facility would not represent proportional growth for the small town. The chamber said it represents the broader region and has been discussing both opportunities and challenges with Pine Island residents. The Pine Island Chamber of Commerce had not publicly taken a position, and the Pine Island City Council still must decide whether the project can move forward.
