The proposed development, spearheaded by developer Felmouth Tech, includes up to 590,000 square feet of data center space across two buildings and an electrical substation, located near the Rapahhanic Regional Jail off I-95 and Route 1. Felmouth Tech claims the project could bring a $2 billion investment and offer tax relief to Stafford residents.
However, residents living near the proposed site are voicing strong opposition, citing existing problems with noise from current data centers, pollution, and unreliable electricity. One resident highlighted the decision to purchase their home in what they believed was a "great community," only to face worsening conditions. Reports indicate some residents are selling their homes due to these concerns.
During their meeting, the planning commission voted to recommend the project, though some commissioners did raise specific concerns regarding setbacks and potential environmental impacts. The project's ultimate fate now lies with the Stafford County Board of Supervisors, who are expected to make a final decision by December.
