Polling shows Texans opposition towards data centers, as politicians reverse course

A recent poll from the Texas Politics Project at UT Austin reveals that 56% of Texans oppose the construction of data centers in their communities, though the researchers note more education is needed on the topic. This public sentiment appears to be influencing politicians, including Governor Greg Abbott, who has notably shifted his stance on data center development.
Initially a proponent, Governor Abbott last month called on the Public Utilities Commission to regulate the industry more stringently, proposing that data centers should be responsible for their own water and power infrastructure. Following this, he announced that a data center project in East Texas had been canceled for failing to meet these new standards. Experts suggest this reversal is influenced by election politics, with one expert stating, "It's impossible to not see election politics playing out. Governor Abbott's reversal of his earlier kind of unfettered support for AI development being sort of modified into a much more a much more sort of slow approach."
Briana Willis from ABC13 Houston reported on these developments, also highlighting that a pro-data center group called Texas Connects, which works with the Data Center Coalition, is circulating videos to educate the public on the benefits of data centers. Despite their efforts, the growing opposition and policy changes are evident, with a hearing on data center investments scheduled in the Texas Senate committee next week.
