Surry County considers 24-month data center moratorium
Surry County Commissioners are considering a 24-month extension to a moratorium on data center development approvals. The proposal follows an initial 60-day pause and is intended to provide time to draft necessary zoning regulation amendments. A public hearing is scheduled for July 20 to decide on the extension.
Surry County Commissioners are contemplating a significant extension to a moratorium on data center development approvals, proposing a 24-month pause. This consideration follows an initial 60-day moratorium enacted earlier this month. The county currently lacks specific data center proposals but aims to proactively address potential developments as they become more common across North Carolina.
Adrienne Gardner, the county’s Development Services Director, recommended the 24-month extension, emphasizing the complexity and critical importance of data center regulation to the citizens of Surry County. Staff are already working on amending zoning regulations to accommodate these facilities. Commissioners are slated to make a decision on the moratorium extension at a public hearing scheduled for July 20.
