Amid commission debate, city manager says Tallahassee cannot currently support a data center
Tallahassee city commissioners debated a proposed one-year moratorium on data centers. The City Manager stated that current city laws and utility capacity already prevent data centers. The motion for a moratorium ultimately failed.
Tallahassee city commissioners convened a meeting where they debated potential restrictions on data center development within the city. Commissioner Jeremy Matlow introduced a motion to enact a one-year moratorium on data centers. However, City Manager Reese Goad countered that such a moratorium was presently unnecessary, as existing local laws, including the comprehensive plan and land use ordinances, already prohibit data centers from being established in Tallahassee. Goad further noted that the city's current utility infrastructure would require tripling in size to adequately support a data center.
Despite Matlow's proposal, the motion for a moratorium ultimately failed with a 3-2 vote. Commissioners Matlow and Porter supported the measure, while the majority voted against it. The outcome signifies that, for now, Tallahassee's existing regulatory framework continues to disallow data center operations.
