The Leon County Commission unanimously voted to initiate the process for an 18-month moratorium on large-scale data centers within Leon County. This decision was driven by concerns over the potential environmental impacts of such facilities, including water usage, and a perceived need for more research and specific local regulations before any future projects are considered.

Commissioners, including Nick Maddox, expressed that while they are not entirely opposed to data centers, they require a better understanding of how these facilities would be used and regulated in the county. Commissioner Brian Welch supported the moratorium but emphasized the importance of analyzing potential economic opportunities before making long-term decisions. As part of the moratorium, county staff have been tasked with developing potential regulations for future data center projects over the next 12 months, with recommendations to be presented before the moratorium's expiration. The measure will require two public hearings before it can be finalized.

In a separate but related technology discussion, the commission also voted against approving federal grant funding for Flock cameras, which use artificial intelligence for license plate and vehicle identification. This decision followed significant opposition from Leon County residents and commissioners, who raised concerns about privacy and potential vulnerabilities of the technology. The commission also plans to explore its authority to prohibit or remove Flock cameras within the county.
