Michigan's significant investments in electric vehicle (EV) battery production are now finding a new, critical market in powering artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. Michigan, after investing billions into an electric vehicle (EV) revolution, is now finding a potentially enormous new market for those investments in the rapidly growing artificial intelligence (AI) sector. LG Energy Solution this week commenced production at its Lansing battery plant, a more than $2 billion facility initially developed with General Motors to supply EV batteries.

However, with U.S. EV growth slowing, LG has diversified the 226-acre plant to manufacture batteries for both electric vehicles and stationary energy storage. This latter market is increasingly vital for utilities and the massive electricity demands of AI data centers. The plant is expected to exceed 35 gigawatt-hours of annual battery capacity and create approximately 1,700 jobs at full production.

The demand for reliable electricity from data centers presents a significant challenge for existing grids, as highlighted by PJM Interconnection, the nation's largest regional grid operator. PJM has proposed requiring major power users like data centers to reduce demand during grid emergencies, indicating the strain on supplies. This situation creates a powerful incentive for data center developers to secure power sources independent of the traditional grid.

Michigan-based companies are responding to this opportunity. LG's Lansing plant will produce lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries for stationary energy storage, with a $4.3 billion agreement already in place with Tesla to manufacture cells for its Megapack 3 stationary energy-storage systems starting in 2027. Separately, Brighton-based Bratic Energy is developing on-site power systems for AI data centers, combining various generation technologies into microgrids to offset 100% of energy use. DTE Energy also plans to deploy LG batteries as part of its Michigan energy-storage strategy. The article suggests that Michigan's strategy should not be to choose between EVs and AI, but to build for both, leveraging its existing industrial ecosystem.
