Gov. Pillen's new executive order brings hope to those worried about data centers
Nebraska Governor Pillen issued an executive order aimed at addressing public concerns about data centers, particularly regarding environmental and water impacts. Despite the order, construction continues on a $1.2 billion data center project in Lincoln. Residents are hopeful the newly formed data center task force will provide more clarity on these issues.
A recent poll conducted by KLKNTV revealed significant public apprehension regarding data center development, with 70% of respondents opposing a data center near their homes. This sentiment reflects growing concerns among Nebraska residents, including Wahoo native Kendra Robinson, who voiced hopes for transparency on environmental impact and water consumption.
Despite an executive order from Governor Pillen aimed at addressing these worries, construction at a data center site at North 56th and Highway 77 in Lincoln continues "virtually uninterrupted." Workers were observed clearing land and operating cranes, indicating business as usual for the $1.2 billion project.
Robinson and other constituents expressed relief at the governor's announcement but emphasized the need for concrete information. They anticipate the Governor's data center task force will provide crucial research on water usage and environmental impacts, as well as job security, to alleviate their anxieties.
