Maine Senate Candidate Daniel Sayre Discusses Data Center Development and State Policy
Maine Senate candidate Daniel Sayre said large-scale AI data centers generally are unsuitable for Maine because of potential impacts on electricity rates, noise, water use and pollution. He supports statewide standards for data centers and previously backed a bill that would have temporarily paused their development, but the governor vetoed it.
Daniel Sayre, a Maine Senate candidate representing Wells, Kennebunk, Kennebunkport, Berwick and North Berwick, said large-scale AI data centers could worsen the state’s already high electricity rates and create significant noise, water and pollution impacts. Although he said data centers support cloud computing and other technologies, he argued that large facilities built elsewhere are generally unsuitable for Maine.
Sayre said he supported LD 307, which would have temporarily paused data center development while statewide guidelines were created, but the governor vetoed the measure. He now supports statewide standards for siting and operating large data centers, rather than the patchwork of municipal bans emerging across Maine.
