The Charlotte City Council has scheduled a public hearing for October 12, 2026, to allow residents to comment on a proposed 11-month extension of the city's current data center moratorium. The initial 150-day moratorium, enacted in June and set to expire on November 5, 2026, aimed to provide city staff time to research and develop new regulatory policies for data centers within state law. Councilwoman Dimple Ajmera emphasized the decision's broad impact on the environment, residents, and taxpayers.
If approved, the extension would prolong the pause on new data center development until October 11, 2027. During this period, city staff, along with a newly established 19-person task force, will continue to consult with experts and external companies, such as Duke. Deputy City Manager Alyson Craig stated that more time is needed to "flesh out" proposed ordinance changes and conduct additional research to create different standards for various types and scales of data centers.
