The Cordele City Commission has announced a public hearing scheduled for September 17 at the Planning and Zoning Commission to discuss a new ordinance. The proposed ordinance aims to amend the city's zoning regulations to provide for the approval and regulation of data centers, research and development facilities, and substations.
County Administrator David Wade stated that while the City of Cordele has not yet entered into an agreement with a data center or been approached by one, city officials believe it is necessary to be prepared for future developments. The move follows similar discussions regarding data center ordinances in nearby Americus.
Commissioner George Singletary, who attended a concerned citizens' meeting in Americus, expressed concerns about a proposed data center project outside Cordele's city limits, though he believes it differs from the one planned in Americus.
