Dixon City Council approves 45-day ban for data center development
The Dixon City Council unanimously approved a 45-day moratorium on new data center development. The pause will allow city staff to study potential effects on water, air, noise, infrastructure and the local tax base, with possible extensions of up to two years each.
The Dixon City Council in Solano County unanimously imposed a 45-day moratorium on data center development so city staff can assess the facilities’ potential effects on local infrastructure and the environment. Vice Mayor Jim Ernest said residents want greater transparency and advance notice before any project moves into the city. The review will examine issues including water use, air quality, noise and impacts on the local tax base.
The moratorium may be extended twice for periods of up to two years, with a four-fifths council vote required for each extension. The action follows growing data center and battery energy storage development across California, as well as similar measures in other cities, including Riverbank. Gov. Gavin Newsom recently signed seven bills addressing the state’s approach to data centers.
