Following the county's lead, municipalities within Athens County have taken more concrete steps. Athens Township trustees voted to halt approval of zoning permits for a proposed data center for up to a year. Additionally, the Athens City Council approved a one-year moratorium on data centers, effectively pausing development to assess potential impacts. Roxanne Groff and Heather Cantino, both involved with the Buckeye Environmental Network and Athens County’s Future Action Network, collaborated on the resolution, emphasizing the "extraordinary burden" data centers place on communities and resources.
