Elmira City Council approves temporary ban on data centers

The Elmira City Council has enacted a temporary, 18-month ban on new data center developments within the city. The resolution, which was approved by the council, allows officials time to conduct further research into the different types of data centers and understand their potential effects on the community. Fourth district council member Gray Brinn initially proposed a resolution that sought to prohibit zoning for data centers outright. However, this measure was later amended and ultimately adopted as the temporary ban. The council retains the authority to overturn the resolution before its 18-month term concludes.
