Grimes City Council moves to regulate data center proposals
The Grimes City Council adopted requirements that data center developers notify nearby property owners, hold public town halls and create a project website before submitting an application. City officials said the measure is a proactive regulation, not a moratorium, and that no data center applications have yet been filed.
The Grimes City Council approved a resolution requiring prospective data center developers to notify property owners within 500 feet of a proposed site, conduct public town halls and publish project information online before applying to build. Developers must complete all of those steps before submitting an application.
The measure comes as data centers have become a contentious issue for local governments, but Grimes officials emphasized that it does not impose a development moratorium. The mayor said the city has not received any data center applications and described the action as a proactive effort to establish public-engagement requirements.
