MidAmerican Energy is facing significant local opposition to its proposal for a 6.5-mile transmission line upgrade in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The utility company states the project is necessary to meet the increased energy demands of a new data center under development in the city.

Residents of the Briarwood neighborhood, whose homes are near the proposed route, expressed strong concerns at a public meeting. They cited potential negative impacts on property values, noise pollution, health risks, and questioned why the powerful lines would traverse an agriculturally zoned area instead of following Interstate 80.

Council Bluffs Mayor also voiced opposition to MidAmerican Energy's plan. In response to the backlash, Josh Birmingham, an engineer with MidAmerican Energy, indicated the company would "go back to the drawing board" to re-examine alternative routes, including the interstate option, before finalizing the plan. Residents highlighted a recent state law allowing transmission lines along interstates, reinforcing their call for a different path.
