Berleen Wobeter, a Democratic candidate for Iowa House District 53, supports a statewide moratorium on new data center approvals until Iowa adopts standards for construction, cooling systems, power arrangements and infrastructure costs. She argues rural communities need independent information and a meaningful role in decisions about data center development and other emerging technologies.

Berleen Wobeter, a Tama County farmer and Democratic candidate for Iowa House District 53, is calling for a statewide moratorium on new data center approvals in Iowa. She says the pause should remain in place until the state establishes standards addressing electricity demand, water use, closed-loop cooling, dependable power arrangements and safeguards against shifting infrastructure costs to residents.

Wobeter said rural communities should receive independent analysis of data centers’ economic, environmental, health and infrastructure effects rather than relying solely on developers. She cited a public forum she organized in Tama County featuring Doug Sevey, CEO of Enseva Data Center, as an effort to help residents understand the issue, while also advocating broader protections for rural communities as Iowa considers artificial intelligence and other technologies.
