The Metropolitan Development Commission in Indianapolis unanimously approved a moratorium on new data center developments, halting construction until the end of 2027. This decision allows local leaders time to research the impacts of data centers and establish new regulations. Three already-approved data center projects in Indianapolis will not be affected by the moratorium.

Indianapolis' Metropolitan Development Commission has unanimously approved a temporary moratorium on new data center developments within Marion County, effectively preventing any new construction until the end of 2027. The vote, passing 6-0, makes Marion County the latest locality in Indiana to pause data center expansion to allow for further research into their environmental and economic impacts.

Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett and Council President Maggie Lewis publicly support the measure. Following the moratorium's enactment, the Department of Metropolitan Development will collaborate with the Mayor's office and the City-County Council to engage a consultant, conduct comprehensive studies, and develop specific regulations for future data center projects. Three data centers that received prior approval from the commission will not be impacted by the new moratorium, including projects in Decatur Township, Martindale Brightwood, and on the city's east side.
