Former President Donald Trump publicly criticized the moratorium in an interview with Punchbowl News, calling it "a mistake" and emphasizing the financial benefits data centers bring to local communities.
Josh Blank, Research Director at the Texas Politics Project, noted that the moratorium places Governor Abbott in a politically challenging position within his party, as it can be perceived as anti-development or anti-business. Blank also highlighted a June UT Texas Politics Project poll showing that a majority of Texas voters oppose data center construction in their communities.
Despite Trump's comments, Abbott's office has affirmed its stance, stating that "Texans must come first," and there is no indication that the governor plans to alter his decision.
