Abbott Directs Comprehensive Data Center Audit
Governor Abbott has directed the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) to conduct a comprehensive audit of all data centers seeking connection to the Texas grid. This audit must be completed before any data center project can move forward, with non-compliant projects being denied connection. The directive aims to protect grid reliability and Texans' quality of life amid concerns over unprecedented load growth from data center requests.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has issued a directive to the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) for a comprehensive audit of all data centers currently in ERCOT's interconnection process.
This audit is mandated to verify and ensure compliance before any data center project can advance, with non-compliant projects facing denial of connection to the Texas grid. Governor Abbott emphasized that the primary goal is to safeguard the safety and quality of life for Texans, stating, "Texans must come first."
The directive stems from significant concerns over the reliability and stability of the Texas electric grid. ERCOT is currently reviewing requests totaling over 474 gigawatts for grid connection, which is more than five times the state's record peak electricity demand. Approximately 90 percent of these new power requests originate from data center projects, contributing to this unprecedented load growth.
