The proposed Comanche Circle project, backed by Florida-based Sailfish Investors, envisions a massive multi-campus data center park spanning up to 2,600 acres near Tolar. Supporters highlight its economic potential, while residents and environmental advocates, organized under 'Protect the Paluxy Valley Inc.', express concerns over water supplies, electrical infrastructure, noise, and the rural character of the community.
The controversy has also reached the courts, where a district judge recently ruled against developers. The developers had argued that two proposed projects should have been automatically approved due to county officials' failure to act within a 30-day deadline, but the judge determined the 30-day rule applies only to subdivision plats, not commercial concept plans. Additionally, NRG Energy withdrew its air permit application for the proposed Tolar Power Center, a 1,200-megawatt plant intended to supply electricity to the Comanche Circle project, following thousands of comments from opponents.
County leaders had previously considered a moratorium on data center development, but commissioners voted against it due to questions about the county's legal authority to impose such restrictions. Tuesday's meeting is anticipated to offer further insight into how local leaders plan to address the increasing interest in data center development within Hood County.
