The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) is developing a new rate structure for new data centers and re-evaluating rates for existing facilities, according to TVA board member Randy Jones. Speaking from his office in Guntersville, Alabama, Jones emphasized the need for incoming data centers to provide detailed plans for power procurement, payment, and integration into TVA’s transmission system, ensuring costs are not shifted to residential customers. This initiative addresses growing pressure on the electric grid from significant economic development, including a $1.5 billion Google data center expansion and other major industrial projects across the Valley.

Jones highlighted the importance of natural gas as a rapid solution for meeting increasing power demand in the short term, while longer-term generation solutions are developed. His comments align with efforts by Huntsville, Athens, and Scottsboro in North Alabama to develop a new regional natural gas pipeline. The TVA’s move comes amid national scrutiny regarding data center energy consumption and its impact on household power bills. Any customer requesting more than 100 megawatts requires board approval, a threshold many large data center campuses exceed.
