South Carolina House candidates John McCravy and C. Rauch Wise outlined differing approaches to data center development in House District 13, which includes parts of Greenwood and Laurens counties. McCravy supports proposed statewide requirements for water use, electricity costs, noise and setbacks, while Wise favors applying the same scrutiny as other major industries and preserving local zoning authority.

Republican incumbent John McCravy and Democratic challenger C. Rauch Wise described their positions on data center development while competing for South Carolina House District 13, which includes portions of Greenwood and Laurens counties. McCravy said he is working on the proposed South Carolina Data Center Community Protection Act, which would establish statewide standards for water use, electricity costs, noise pollution and setbacks while allowing stricter local rules.

Wise said data centers should be evaluated like other large industrial projects and rejected when their electricity, water or environmental demands are excessive. He argued that county zoning authorities should retain primary control over which industries are permitted locally. The candidates also discussed energy costs, taxes, health care, artificial intelligence and other legislative priorities.
