Leon County Approves 18-Month Moratorium on Large-Scale Data Centers
Leon County commissioners unanimously approved an 18-month moratorium on large-scale data centers and other high-electricity-use facilities. The pause blocks new development approvals while the county studies potential impacts on electricity demand, water resources, infrastructure and nearby neighborhoods.
Leon County commissioners in Florida unanimously approved an 18-month moratorium on large-scale data centers and other facilities with substantial electricity needs. The ordinance temporarily bars the county from accepting, reviewing or approving permits, development orders, rezonings and site plans for covered projects.
County officials will use the moratorium to evaluate effects on power infrastructure, water supplies, neighborhoods, land use and natural resources. Staff is expected to return to commissioners in September 2027 with findings and proposed amendments to the county’s comprehensive plan and land development regulations; the moratorium is intended as a temporary pause rather than a permanent ban.
