Alamance County commissioners vote for one-year data center moratorium
Alamance County commissioners unanimously adopted a one-year moratorium on data centers after hearing significant opposition from residents. This decision provides the county with time to study and revise development rules and regulations for future data center parameters.
Alamance County commissioners unanimously approved a one-year moratorium on data center development, following a lengthy public hearing where over three dozen residents, predominantly opposed to such facilities, expressed their concerns and advocated for a two-year pause. The decision provides the commissioners with "breathing room" to thoroughly review and potentially amend the county's development regulations to establish new parameters for future data center projects.
County attorney Rik Stevens had initially drafted a motion for a six-month moratorium, but the commissioners opted for a full year. The packed courtroom at the Historic Court House underscored the significant community interest and opposition to unrestricted data center growth in the county.
