The La Crosse County Board of Supervisors voted nearly unanimously on Thursday to enact an 18-month moratorium on new data center development. This halt applies to areas within the county's zoning jurisdiction and is effective immediately, running through December 2027, unless an ordinance change is adopted sooner.
County Board Supervisor Kelly Leibold, representing District 1, emphasized the importance of a deliberate approach to data center development. Leibold stated that while data centers are likely a necessity, it's crucial to develop them responsibly and ethically, especially given the "heated topic" and emotional responses surrounding them. The pause is intended to allow for careful consideration of their impacts.
During the moratorium, a dedicated data study committee will examine various issues related to data center development, including potential environmental and economic consequences. County leaders have also committed to incorporating public involvement throughout the review process, aiming to foster transparency and strengthen public confidence in county decision-making, as articulated by District 30 County Board Supervisor Dillon Mader.
