Cleveland City Council extended the city’s data center moratorium through Jan. 29, or until new regulations are adopted. The pause continues while officials develop rules addressing concerns about electricity prices, water use, noise and neighborhood impacts without preventing future investment.

Cleveland extended its moratorium on new and pending data center permits as city officials continue drafting regulations for the facilities. Councilmember Brian Kazy said the extension reflects the fact that legislation is not ready for introduction, rather than pressure from outside groups.

The moratorium, initially approved July 15, will remain in place until Jan. 29 or until Cleveland City Council passes new data center rules. Officials have held public hearings, surveyed residents and visited existing facilities as they weigh concerns over electricity costs, water consumption and noise against the potential for additional investment. Mayor Justin Bibb said the city’s regulations should protect residents and neighborhoods while keeping the city open to development.
