Council member Rohli Booker introduced two significant measures on Tuesday, September 8, addressing major infrastructure projects.

One proposal specifically outlines a pause on new data center sites, directing city planners to conduct a comprehensive review of current zoning regulations. The goal is to recommend targeted changes that specifically address the unique requirements and challenges posed by technology infrastructure facilities. The second measure suggests the formation of an advisory group. This group would be tasked with examining prospective projects that place substantial demands on local resources, analyzing their potential effects on local communities and municipal budgets. This advisory body would not hold superseding authority but would provide crucial guidance.

These considerations in Fort Wayne align with actions taken in other Indiana communities. Notably, Gary Mayor Eddie Melton recently enacted an executive order implementing a 12-month moratorium on new technology facility applications. This pause allows Gary officials time to study the potential strains on the electrical grid and natural resource consumption, even though the city currently lacks any server farms. Mayor Melton has also highlighted the broader need for discussions beyond individual municipalities when establishing regulations for artificial intelligence infrastructure. An earlier, similar proposal in Fort Wayne for a technology study group was previously withdrawn by its sponsor.
