FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. – A contentious proposal for an AI data center, codenamed "Project Flash," in Franklin County has been abandoned, according to county supervisor Mike Meredith. The announcement comes after approximately six months of organized community opposition from local residents and the Franklin County Community Coalition. The proposed project, which would have been operated by Crusoe AI, was envisioned as a 50- to 100-megawatt facility potentially located at Summit View Business Park near Rocky Mount.

Community members had raised significant concerns about the data center's potential impact on the area's natural resources, local electricity grid, and overall quality of life. Rocky Mount Mayor Holland Perdue echoed these sentiments, stating that such an investment needed to be the "right investment" for the community, considering its unique resources and expectations. While residents like Laura Carter expressed relief, they remain vigilant, emphasizing that this is "a battle, but we haven't won the war" and will continue to monitor local government actions.
