Crosby, Moore debate data centers, Great Salt Lake, economy
Utah congressional candidates Peter Crosby and Rep. Blake Moore debated the proposed Stratos Project data center in Box Elder County. Both called for greater transparency and public involvement, while raising concerns about water use, electricity costs, environmental impacts and local control.
Democrat Peter Crosby and Republican Rep. Blake Moore discussed the proposed Stratos Project data center in Box Elder County during a Utah 2nd Congressional District debate at Utah State University in Logan. Both candidates said residents should receive more information and opportunities to participate before large infrastructure projects are approved.
Crosby said he urged county commissioners to delay action so officials could gather more information, and called for disclosure of environmental impacts, water consumption, tax incentives and financial risks. Moore said the project demonstrated the need for a more systematic process, including protections against higher electricity costs and greater transparency about resource demands.
The candidates also disagreed over the role and accountability of the Military Installation Development Authority, which has been involved in the project. Their discussion linked data center growth to the Great Salt Lake, Utah’s water allocation, energy policy and the potential use of military or federally controlled land for future facilities.
