The Louisville Metro Council has enacted a 180-day moratorium on new data center construction following protests and lobbying efforts by residents and community groups. Council members voted 24-1 to approve the pause, which also includes an amendment preventing existing buildings from being rezoned for data center use.
The decision was hailed as a win by neighbors, but community groups like "No Data Center 502" expressed that the six-month pause does not go far enough, as they had advocated for a full-year moratorium and a complete ban on hyperscale data centers in Louisville.
During the 180-day period, the Metro Council plans to collaborate with utility providers, environmental experts, and residents to draft comprehensive updated zoning laws for future data center facilities. Councilwoman Jennifer Chapel, sponsor of the moratorium, stated that this pause allows the council to understand the rules before future data center proposals are considered.
