New $100 billion data center announced for Paducah, Kentucky
The US Department of Energy announced a new $100 billion high-performance computing data center campus for the former Paducah Gaseous diffusion plant in Paducah, Kentucky. This project, one of the largest in the country, will be operated by Brookfield, with NextEra Energy building a natural gas plant to support it and provide excess electricity back to the grid.
Western Kentucky is slated to become home to a significant data center project. The US Department of Energy announced plans for a new $100 billion high-performance computing data center campus in the Paducah area, to be located at the former Paducah Gaseous diffusion plant.
The facility will be operated by Brookfield, an AI company. NextEra Energy is tasked with constructing a natural gas plant to support the data center's operations. The Department of Energy anticipates this plant will also generate excess electricity for the grid. The site, originally established in 1952, was decommissioned in 2013 after producing enriched uranium for the nation's nuclear weapons program.
