The City of Green is considering placing a moratorium on data center permits due to concerns about electricity and water consumption. This discussion arose during a City Council meeting in response to a resident's inquiry about data center impacts. Officials noted that while the city's zoning and available resources largely preclude it from being a data center location, they are actively studying the issue.

During a recent Green City Council meeting, resident Pat Carleski raised concerns regarding the environmental impact of data centers, specifically their electricity and water requirements, and the potential effect on residents' utility bills.
In response, Planning and Development Director Wayne Wiethe stated that the city is actively investigating the issue and contemplating a moratorium on issuing permits for data center operations. He also noted that the city's current zoning, limited water access, and available space generally deter data center developers. Councilman Gerard Neugebauer further elaborated on different types of data centers, distinguishing between smaller operations and large-scale AI facilities, and expressed hope that local governments would resist offering tax abatements to data center projects, which could generate significant revenue for cities.
