Former President Donald Trump recently criticized Texas Governor Greg Abbott's decision to implement a statewide pause on approvals for data centers seeking connection to the state's electric grid. Trump, in an interview with Punchbowl News, called the move a "mistake," emphasizing the significant economic benefits data centers bring to communities.
Governor Abbott's spokesperson, Andrew Mahaleris, defended the policy, stating it is necessary because less than 10% of data centers responded to previous state requests for power and water usage reports. Mahaleris highlighted an over 500% increase in peak electricity demand tracked by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), warning of potential threats to grid reliability. The moratorium mandates that data centers provide the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) and ERCOT with comprehensive information, including power and water consumption, cooling methods, community impact mitigation efforts, and ownership details. Projects failing this audit face denied grid connection.
The policy contrasts with Governor Abbott's previous pro-business stance, which included welcoming Google's $40 billion investment in data centers in Texas. The issue has created a political divide, with some Texans actively opposing new data centers due to concerns about water depletion, increased electricity bills, and noise and light pollution. Meanwhile, Democratic opponent Gina Hinojosa has also advocated for greater oversight of data centers, suggesting Abbott's "pause" is insufficient.
