Amazon Withdraws Proposed Data Center Campus at George Washington University in Ashburn
Amazon will not build a data center campus on George Washington University's campus in Ashburn after reaching an agreement with Loudoun County. Amazon will donate 25 acres for a community art center and indoor sports facility and seek rezoning focused on mixed-use development and housing, while the county will expedite—but not bypass—the approval process.
Amazon has agreed to withdraw its proposed data center campus at George Washington University's Ashburn campus, according to Loudoun County Board of Supervisors Chair Phyllis Randall. Under the agreement, Amazon will donate 25 acres for a community art center and indoor sports facility, while pursuing rezoning of the campus for mixed-use development with housing as the primary focus.
Randall said Loudoun County will move quickly to consider the rezoning, but Supervisor Matt Letourneau emphasized that the proposal must still go before the Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors and undergo traffic and environmental studies. Amazon said it heard community concerns about placing data centers on the campus.
