Pulaski County advances one data center moratorium
Pulaski County's Quorum Court debated two data center moratorium proposals, with a less restrictive version passing despite community opposition. This decision allows an already approved data center project near Wrightsville to proceed, while residents voiced concerns about transparency, environmental impact, and potential legal risks for the county.
The Pulaski County Quorum Court recently held a contentious meeting regarding data center development, particularly focusing on a proposed hyperscale data center near Wrightsville, south of Little Rock. Supporters highlighted the economic investment and technological advancements promised by such facilities, while opponents raised concerns about the significant power and water demands, potential noise pollution, and lack of transparency.
Two dueling moratorium proposals were considered. Justice of the Peace Julie Blackwood sponsored a stricter ordinance, which would have halted the already approved project. However, this proposal failed to pass. Instead, an ordinance sponsored by Diane Curry, which was less restrictive and allowed the existing project to continue, was approved. Community members expressed frustration and upset following this decision, feeling their concerns about their livelihoods and the environment were overshadowed by the county's worries about potential legal liabilities. The next meeting concerning data centers in Pulaski County is scheduled for July 23rd before the planning commission in Little Rock.
