Separately, a poll conducted by the Texas Politics Project at the University of Texas indicates that data centers remain unpopular among 57% of Texans. Only 30% of respondents support data center projects in their communities, with strong opposition from Democrats and independents. James Henson, Director of the Texas Politics Project, noted that opposition is significant in both suburban and rural areas, creating a "political powder keg" for incumbents in the upcoming November election.
Governor Greg Abbott, a Republican, has reportedly shifted his stance on data centers from a "fast lane" to a "slow lane" approach due to political pressures. Texans' concerns about data centers include negative impacts on quality of life, the environment, strain on the electrical grid and water supply, and increased utility bills. Positive perceptions include new technologies, some local employment, tax revenue, and U.S. economic growth.
