Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman were present at the groundbreaking ceremony for a new hyperscale data center in Saline Township, Washtenaw County. The controversial 2.2-million-square-foot facility, a significant AI infrastructure project, represents a $16 billion investment in the state.
Altman highlighted the data center's role as the first of its kind built by the company in the Midwest, expressing a personal connection to the region. He envisioned the site as a potential hub for groundbreaking advancements, including cancer research, global student education, and AI-powered support for small businesses.
Governor Whitmer reiterated her stance on artificial intelligence, stating that human intelligence cannot be replaced and AI should serve as a tool to enhance it. She stressed that Michigan residents must be involved in building and operating the center and should benefit from its development. Whitmer also mentioned Michigan's commitment to responsible AI adoption, including "strong AI guardrails" focused on jobs, energy, and the environment. The project is expected to create over 2,500 construction jobs and more than 450 permanent on-site jobs, with an additional 1,500 jobs across Washtenaw County and the surrounding region.
