Elizabeth City Council approves 18-month data center moratorium
The Elizabeth City Council unanimously approved an 18-month moratorium on data center applications. The pause followed public concerns that the city’s existing development ordinance did not adequately regulate data centers, though its length may change after review by the city attorney.
The Elizabeth City Council in North Carolina unanimously approved an 18-month moratorium on data center applications during a regular meeting Monday. The measure replaced a proposed text amendment to the city’s Unified Development Ordinance and may be modified after review by the city attorney.
The moratorium follows a public hearing where residents questioned whether the ordinance provided sufficient safeguards for data center development. Its duration is longer than the six-month moratorium recently adopted by neighboring Perquimans County while that county reviews its own regulations.
