Janesville clashes over data centers, development of former GM site
Janesville residents and labor leaders are divided over a proposed data center at the former General Motors site. The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers says the project could support 1,000 to 2,000 jobs, while Janesville for Responsible Development is calling for stronger safeguards addressing infrastructure, quality of life and community risk.
A proposed data center at Janesville's former General Motors site has become a point of disagreement in the community. Garrett Harwick of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 890 said the project could support 1,000 to 2,000 jobs, including construction, electrical and apprenticeship opportunities, with some work continuing after the initial building phase.
Janesville for Responsible Development organizer said the debate should extend beyond jobs and investment. The group is concerned that local officials may not have sufficient tools to regulate data centers and wants the community to consider infrastructure demands, quality-of-life effects and the long-term risks of a project of that scale.
