Aurora City Council unanimously advanced an ordinance on first reading that would restrict where data centers can be built. The proposed zoning rules would bar data centers from areas near schools, homes and assisted-living facilities, but some public commenters said the measure does not go far enough and called for action against the Trident data center.

The Aurora City Council unanimously approved the first reading of an ordinance that would change the city’s zoning rules for data centers. If adopted, the ordinance would prohibit new data centers from being built in areas containing schools, homes or assisted-living facilities.

Public commenters expressed opposition to the proposal, arguing that it does not adequately address the Trident data center or hold its developer accountable. The measure remains subject to further consideration after its initial reading.
